3D and ABA Archery formats are designed to test all aspects of an archers skill.
Usually shot at unmarked distances at realistic foam or paper targets of game animals these games require the archer to:
1) Work out the distance to the target without a range finder. (although now a category exists for their use)
2) Identify where the scoring zones are which can be hard to see on the target
3) Now find those aiming points again while at full draw
4) Execute the shot and make it count.
Because of these extra factors 3D arrows tend to be built differently to many other games. Often going for a larger diameter and lighter construction.
